I am a descendant of white Scottish/Swedish/Finnish settlers and was raised on Treaty 6/7 territory (mihkwâpisimosos (Red Deer), amiskwaciy/amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton)) - land of mountains, coulees, and prairie sunsets sometimes known as Alberta. I now live and practice in tkaronto (a log submerged in water/standing trees in water in Kanyen'kéha (Mohawk)), within Treaty 13 and the Williams Treaties, and the Meeting Place of many Indigenous nations since time immemorial. This territory is covered by the Dish With One Spoon wampum, an agreement between the Anishinaabe Three Fires Confederacy (Ojibwe, Odawa and Potawatomi Nations) and Haudenosaunee Confederacy (Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora Nations) to share peaceably and care for the lands around the Great Lakes. We are all treaty people. All of the therapeutic approaches I believe in owe much to Indigenous, Black, and global majority wisdoms and traditional healing practices. As a white, cis, queer, polyam, and able-bodied-for-now settler I take seriously my obligations to heal and unlearn my internalized colonialism (and white supremacy) and support decolonization, abolition, land back, and cultural revitalization efforts within our communities.
